With the founding of Chisinau State Institute of Medicine in 1945, the Military Department was established. The first chief of chair was A. V. Carpicov, colonel doctor.
Later, the Department was headed by:
1946-1947 – A. A. Velichii, Associate Professor, medical colonel;
1947-1957 – I. I. Platoci, medical colonel;
1957-1964 – I. E. Arhipenco, medical colonel;
1964-1970 – N.F. Mocealov, Doctor of Medical Sciences;
1970-1977 – P. Sorochin, medical colonel;
1977-1986 – A. C. Turcan, colonel doctor;
1986-current – Vasile Dumitras, Doctor of Medical Sciences, medical colonel(r).
In connection with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the independence of the Republic of Moldova, starting from 1 November 1991, the Department was abolished. In 1992, at the initiative of L. Cobileanschii, Rector of the University, and V. Dumitras, medical colonel, and after coordination with the Ministries of Defense and Health and other ministries, by Government Decision No. 257 of April 14, 1992, the Department of Military and Extreme Medicine was established.
By order of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Moldova, coordinated with the Rector of the University, Head of the Department was appointed Vasile Dumitraş, who started the development of teaching materials and the creation of the department’s technical-material base.
Until 2001, the military medical training in the field of health emergency and disaster management for students from all faculties was mandatory, University graduates being awarded the primary rank of medical reserve officer.
Pursuant to the joint order of the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Health No. 191/217 of 2001, the Department was transferred to be under the University's authority, and training was organized in two stages: undergraduate (mandatory) and postgraduate (voluntary). The teaching staff was selected through a competition. Postgraduate training includes the training of reserve medical officers, as well as master's and doctoral training.
